Brooklyn, NY — On Thursday, May 5, 2022, at approximately 12:54 PM, 57-year-old Richard Paris drove his vehicle, a gray 2008 Infiniti, to the front of 2875 West 8th Street, Brooklyn, and blocked northbound traffic on the street. He then exited his vehicle and began to walk around the vicinity while brandishing a large knife. As Paris walked around brandishing the knife, witnesses alerted Police Officer Vincenzo Quinzi, assigned to the 60th Precinct. Police Officer Quinzi, attired in uniform, then approached Paris on foot. As the officer approached, Paris began to charge on a path toward him while continuing to brandish the knife. Also alerted by witnesses, Police Officer Favale, attired in uniform, responded on foot to the front of 2875 West 8th Street where he encountered Paris.

The officer shouted several times for Paris to drop his weapon, however, he refused to do so and began to charge on a path toward Police Officer Favale while now brandishing two knives one in each hand. In response, Police Officer Favale discharged four shots from his service firearm, striking Paris several times about the body. Paris then fell to the ground, however, continued to struggle with Police Officer Favale for possession of the knife as the officer attempted to place him into custody. During the struggle, Paris eventually relinquished possession of the knife, however, continued to resist being placed in handcuffs. Sergeant Alex Guess, assigned to the 60th Precinct and attired in uniform, arrived at the scene and deployed a Taser on Paris.

As a result, he was temporarily incapacitated from the Taser and taken into custody without further incident. During the struggle, Police Officer Favale sustained a stab wound to his left hand. The officer was taken from the scene to Coney Island Hospital where he was treated and later released. Paris was taken from the scene to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn where he was treated for two gunshot wounds to his body. He was subsequently released from the hospital without incident. In connection with this incident, Paris was subsequently arrested and charged with Attempted Assault 1st, Assault 2nd, Menacing of a Police Officer, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th, and related charges.
